Hi, I am John Doe. I love stories. Even now, I still read stories all the time. Reading while listening to a story is an enjoyable way for you to learn new words and improve your English.

    68. 每况愈下 From Bad to Worse

Hearing about such a tragedy, Sean didn't know what to say. But after a pause, Ben continued, "My parents were devastated by my brother's death. They were very angry with me. I felt very guilty inside, but on the outside I didn't show it and instead I blamed Boris himself."

"Well, you didn't make him take drugs. He did it himself," Sean was quick to agree. "Everyone has to be responsible for his own actions."

"Yes, that's true. Everyone has to take responsibility for his own actions. But I did not take responsibility for mine. Anyway, after that my parents started having a lot of problems. They fought a lot, blaming each other for Boris' death. Finally they divorced."

Sean found what Ben said unusual. It was rare that people would admit their own faults. Adults would make children admit they were wrong, but he couldn't remember any adult who would admit wrong on their own. But Ben did. Sean admired that.

"That's a sad story," said Sean.

"Yes, but that was not the end," wiping his tears away, Ben continued. "If it had ended there, then I probably wouldn't be telling you the story because I was very messed up. And I was ashamed of what I had done. Anyway, my grades were going from bad to worse, and finally I got kicked out of school. It was downhill from there. I hated myself. I hated everybody." Ben shook his head as he recalled.

Sharing about one's failures was certainly not something Sean had seen much of before. And Ben didn't seem like a hateful person any more. In fact he came across as caring and personable. Sean wondered what had changed him.

"You don't seem like a hateful person now, so what happened?" asked Sean.
